Ubuntu 14.10 and the Lenovo ThinkPad x250
I recently purchased and received a Lenovo ThinkPad x250 and immediately proceeded to install Ubuntu over whatever version of Windows it came with.

At Ender Labs, pretty much everyone but me uses a Mac. In the last year or so, I've started to realize that there must be some new Mac app or function that, via a hotkey, allows you to select an arbitrary region of your screen, create a screenshot, and then automatically uploads it to a hosting service. I know this, without doing any research, because in irc/slack/gtalk I've started receiving screenshots as responses to questions I ask. These screenshots arrive fairly quickly after said question is asked.
Due to the recent news Regarding Stallman's heart attack, I ended up on the wikipedia page for The Cathedral and the Bazaar, and I was reading the "Guidelines for creating good opensource software". Number 3 says:
Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) is out today!
The Utah OpenSource Conference went underway yesterday. I thought I'd share my experiences and thoughts here as the con progresses.
For whatever reason (I can only assume it has to do with the product being released /after/ Ubuntu 9.04 came out) the Ubuntu devs have decided to call Firefox 3.5 "Shiretoko". You can install alongside your regular Firefox installation by typing @aptitude install firefox-3.5@ and you can run it by typing @firefox-3.5@. That's all well and good, except that the User-Agent string is set to:
This month is my company's national convention. This combined with a secret project I'm working on after hours means I basically have no time to work on Exaile until October. So, no thanks to me, Exaile 0.3.0.1 has been released. This one is brought to you by the other members of the team, and is a bugfix release for 0.3.0. This includes fixing the bug that was causing 0.2.14->0.3 migration problems for most people. Enjoy!
Yup, you probably heard it here last. I've been super busy irl, and just haven't had the time to throw up a blog entry just yet, but 0.3.0 final is out and you can grab it from the Exaile downloads page.
Yeah, that's right.
Check out http://www.exaile.org for more information.
I purchased an HP 1030NR, because, IMHO, they are the sexiest netbooks currently on the market. They are sleek, lightweight, and they don't have a wonkey keyboard layout like some netbooks (I'm looking at you, ASUS).
I've installed Ubuntu on my netbook twice today (don't ask). Probably like the rest of you, part of installing Ubuntu involves going through and changing all of the moronic settings that Gnome comes with as default. This includes changing the default terminal background from white to black, changing font sizes, setting toolbars to "icon only", setting up hotkeys, etc.
Exaile development has been very active in the past few weeks. We are working very hard to make our August goal. As well as picking up mathbr as a developer, we've had quite a few contributors adding/fixing a lot of things. If you're like me, this screenshot makes you drool (click on it to get a larger view):
Don't worry, we're still here, and still hard at work. I thought I would give an update since it's been quite a while since the last one.
After beating Enigmo in the iPhone, I was eager for more. I'm a sucker for these type of games. I downloaded the demo of the Windows version of Enigmo 2, and, to my delight, it works great out of the box in Wine! It's got tons more doodads and etc than the iPhone version, so I'd say it's a perfect upgrade path if you like that game.
Since I upgraded to Jaunty, I had been seriously irritated with their decision to change the way updates are handled.
Following the tradition of retarded naming schemes, Jaunty Jackalope was released today...
My Eee Box (model B202) arrived today. I actually plan on using this machine to run Windows (I have a very short list of things that I require the blasted OS to run)...
Yesterday I decided to upgrade from Gutsy Gibbon to Hardy Heron (beta 1). I usually upgrade early, but my main motivation for this was to be able to implement the new multimedia keys interface working in Exaile. Apparently, the Gnome crew decided to change this particular part of the DBus interface making it backwards incompatable. A description of the Exaile bug can be found here...
Our company is growing fast. When I started in March, 2003, we were hosting our website with some company in Texas. I assumed the position of "Systems Administrator" (I knew Linux fairly well at the time, but I had no formal training in administration) when we moved from the hosting company to our first dedicated server colocated at Xmission. Since that time, we moved from a shared rack to our own cabinet, now housing 10 servers (one is currently powered off, because if we turn it on, we risk blowing our power circuit... yes, we are waiting on a power upgrade)...
At SendOutCards, we use MySQL replication to ensure that if our main database server goes down because of hardware failure, we'll still have an server that is up to date with our data. In a nutshell, our main database server sends another server every update that is performed on itself...
